Example of Magic Mile Calculation

Let’s say you completed your 1-mile time trial in 9 minutes and 3 seconds. The following will be the math needed to find your pace for each distance (5k, 10k, 10-miler, half marathon, marathon).

5k Pace

Your 5K pace would be calculated by adding 33 seconds. This would give you a five-kilometer pace of 9 minutes and 36 seconds.

10k Pace

For each pace beyond the 5k, we must first convert the seconds into minutes.

To do so, divide the number of seconds in your Magic Mile time (3) by 60 to get .05. Now we’re working with the number 9.05.

Next, we multiply 9.05 by 1.15, and we get 10.4075.

We need to find what .4075 minutes is equal to in seconds. To do this, multiply by 60, which gives us 24.45.

We’ll keep things simple and use only the 24 seconds. However, if the first number to the right of the decimal point had been a 5 or higher, we would have rounded up by one second.

We convert back to the number of seconds by solving .4075×60minutes=24.45, the .45 represents unnecessary milliseconds. We can eliminate them.* If the number immediately to the right of the decimal point is a 5 or higher, we will round the seconds up by 1.

10-Mile Pace

To find the 10-mile pace, use that 9.05 number we found and multiply by 1.175 to get 10.63375.

To find our seconds multiply .63375 by 60 to get 38.025.

Keep the 38 seconds, and don’t worry about the milliseconds. Your 10-mile pace is 10 minutes and 38 seconds.

Half Marathon Pace

For your half marathon pace, take the 9.05 and multiply by 1.2 to get 10.86.

Find the seconds by multiplying .86 by 60 to get 51.6. Note: Because we have .6, we round our seconds up by one to equal 52 seconds.

Your half marathon pace is 10 minutes and 52 seconds.

Marathon Pace

Find your marathon pace by multiplying 9.05 by 1.3 to get 11.765.

Find the seconds by multiplying .765 and 60 to get 45.9 seconds. Once again, .9 means we round our seconds up by one second.

We find a marathon pace of 11 minutes and 46 seconds.

Long Run Pace

Jeff’s calculator also includes the formula to find your long-run pace.

This is extremely helpful because you should run significantly slower during your long runs than during your race.

Using that same Magic Mile time of 9:03, solve for your marathon pace. Above we found the marathon pace to be 11:46. Now, add two minutes to get a long run pace of 13:46 per mile.

To successfully run the mile time trial, you must approach the distance proactively.

Also, remember that you’ll need to run this mile test about once every two weeks during your training plan to ensure your training is progressing. So keeping your time trials consistent with one another will help ensure more accurate results.

To run your ultimate Magic Mile test, follow these tips:

✅ First, complete a slow-paced one-mile run.

✅ Complete a few acceleration gliders (This is one of Jeff’s strategies used to improve form and naturally increase speed).

✅ Keep an even pace for each quarter of a mile. Aim to be consistent.

✅ Run nearly as hard as you can without overdoing it for a complete mile. This should be a fast running pace, but you’re not pushing yourself to the point of throwing up.

✅ Walk or jog it out for 5 minutes following the time trial.

✅ Complete your 1-6 miles at a slow jog pace to accomplish your daily mileage needs.

Remember, this will work best with a flat surface free from traffic. Finding a local track where you can run is useful for this type of time trial.
