42 of the Best Gifts for Runners in 2023

Searching for the best gifts for runners?

Finding the right gift can be difficult, whether for a holiday like Christmas, your favorite runner’s birthday, or a special occasion (like finishing their first marathon). This is especially true if you’re not a runner yourself.

I’ve run a dozen marathons and more than 15 half marathons. I’m well-versed in the importance of having the right gear. I’m also well aware of some gifts I’d love to receive.

Whether you’re shopping for yourself or a friend, here are some of the best gifts for runners to help them stay motivated and comfortable as they tackle their next race.

Best Gifts for Runners

These gifts will be great for just about any runner. They’re not gender or distance specific. They could even make great gifts for someone who wants to start their running journey.

Running Socks

Running socks are a staple in every runner’s wardrobe. When looking for the best pair of running socks, you might find that there are a lot of choices.

Here are three top options.

Injinji

Injinji Run socks are my favorite paired with Altra running shoes.

There are many great sock brands for runners. And every runner has their preference.

For me, I run exclusively in Injinji socks. They allow my toes to naturally splay, come in all sock heights, and last for years.

Injinji socks are made with quality materials like Merino Wool, known for wicking sweat away from the skin. Your runner’s feet will stay dry and comfortable for miles.

Balega

Balega running socks have a needle count of 200, meaning these socks are excellent quality.

They aren’t too bulky and have no seams, which prevents blisters and overall discomfort. They’re made to last and are a great road or trail running option.

Darn Tough

Owned and operated as a family-run business, Darn Tough socks are the perfect option for runners.

They offer an unconditional guarantee that your Darn Tough socks will be the longest-lasting socks you’ve ever owned. If not, send them back for a brand-new pair.

Along with great qualities such as moisture-wicking and underfoot cushioning, Darn Tough socks are super rugged and built to last.

Running Hat

Keeping the sun off your face and out of your eyes while running is a must.

When squinting, we exhaust the muscles around our eyes. This doesn’t bode well for running and can fatigue the whole body faster.

Get your favorite runner a great Headsweats hat to keep them stylish and shielded from the sun.

goodr Running Sunglasses

I'm running in a park wearing my goodr running sunglasses. The sunglasses are white with lightning bolt on them. goodrs are not expensive making them one of the best gifts for runners.
I’m wearing my pair of We Are SHOCKED goodr running sunglasses.

For those runners who prefer sunglasses to hats, goodr sunglasses are the best a runner can get.

goodr sunglasses aren’t expensive, come in many different styles and colors, and don’t bounce or slip on the run. You may want to get a few pairs (and one for yourself).

Run Fast. Cook Fast. Eat Slow. running cookbook.

You can’t go wrong with a running cookbook if your runner is a foodie.

I own both Run Fast. Eat Slow. and Run Fast. Cook Fast. Eat Slow. cookbooks. While I can’t say for sure which is my favorite, runners are often busy. For this reason, I would opt for the “Cook Fast” book if you can’t decide.

Handheld Water Bottle

Hydration is essential. Having water during hot summer runs can be life-saving.

When you search for the best option, look for something that can easily be held while running. The following are two of my favorites.

Nathan SpeedDraw Plus
Nathan SpeedDraw Plus handheld running water bottle. A pocket on the side can hold small items.
Nathan SpeedDraw Plus Handheld Water Bottle

With a rating of more than 4.5 stars on Amazon, the Nathan SpeedDraw Plus is the perfect handheld water bottle your runner needs.

It holds 18 ounces of liquid, is insulated to keep drinks cold, and has a massive storage pocket that can hold your phone.

The design also allows you to keep your hand in a neutral position—no need to grip the water bottle and exhaust your hand muscles.

Amphipod Hydraform Thermal-Lite
Amphipod Hydraform Thermal-Lite handheld running water bottle.
Amphipod Hydraform Thermal-Lite Handheld Water Bottle

The Amphipod Hydraform Thermal-Lite is the handheld water bottle I have and use.

It’s slightly larger and holds 20 ounces of liquid. The Amphipod comes in many different color options.

It’s not double-wall insulated like the Nathan, so drinks may not stay as cold for as long. The pocket on the strap is also significantly smaller but is still useful for holding small things like keys and your ID.

Running Belt

This isn’t a belt that holds a runner’s shorts up. Instead, this belt can hold a few small items like your phone, keys, wallet, or fuel.

There are many running belt brands. The Amphipod Airflow MircoStretch Plus Belt supplies plenty of room for small items you need while running.

I use the SPIbelt. It’s perfect for holding onto my phone, keys, credit card, and running fuel. I love the minimalist feel of this belt and how it doesn’t bounce as I run.

Foam Roller

Recovery for a runner often includes myofascial release therapy using a foam roller.

While studies have determined the benefits are minimal, foam rolling remains useful for some reasons.

Foam rolling after tough training runs and challenging races can reduce muscle stiffness. It can also increase the range of motion when paired with dynamic stretching.

While scientists continue to study whether or not foam rolling is truly helpful, runners will continue to foam roll because it feels so good.

Road I.D.

The Road I.D. is an excellent way to ensure your runner’s safety.

This I.D. bracelet tells medical personnel important information. Then, through an online account, a detailed report can be provided. This means medical professionals can know all the details they need to know should something happen to your runner.

OOFOS Recovery Shoes

These are the best recovery shoes for runners. OOFOS are insanely comfortable and really help my joints (especially the ankles and knees) post-long run or race.

There are also so many styles now that you can wear OOFOS anytime.

OOFOS provides cushioning when the joints need it the most following a tough workout. These are truly a gift of love.

Noxgear Tracer2

Gifting your favorite runner safety devices is a great way to show you care.

Some runners won’t invest in safety gear when every runner should. The Noxgear Tracer2 is a light-up running vest that will keep your runner well-seen by motorists. It’s bright, lightweight, and rechargeable.

⚠️ Code MAESMILES saves 35%+ on Noxgear products ⚠️

Tracer Lamp

If you get your runner the Tracer2, I’d suggest getting the Tracer Lamp too. This is an excellent device for runners who run well before sunrise and get caught running after sunset.

This running light clips into the Tracer2 running vest and helps to light the way. As a runner who has fallen many times while running, the Tracer Lamp is a great way to cut down on those instances.

Noxgear 39g

I used to wear headphones on every run. Then I got the Noxgear 39g.

Rather than blocking your ears, the Noxgear 39 is an incredibly lightweight wearable Bluetooth speaker that clips to your clothes. It doesn’t bounce around or fall off while running. And the sound is incredible!

For your runner who loves to listen to music and podcasts on the run, I highly recommend gifting them this speaker.

💲💲💲💲 Gifts for Runners Over $100

Massage Gun

A massage gun is another great item to help your favorite runner recover after challenging runs.

These percussive massage devices emulate a deep tissue massage. This leads to better recovery that improves your run performance.

The most popular brand is Theragun, but I’d also consider Hyperice for its rave reviews.

Gifts for Runners – Men

NipGuard

This item makes for a great stocking stuffer for runners.

NipGuard is an anti-chafe covering that will help keep your favorite runner’s nipples from painful nipple chafe.

There’s nothing worse than the shower post-run when you find all the spots where you chafed on the run. I’ve heard my boyfriend scream from the other room when he’s ended up with nipple chafing.

This makes a great practical and inexpensive gift for runners!

Squirrel’s Nut Butter

Squirrel’s Nut Butter is an anti-chafe salve that prevents chafing just about anywhere. It also helps if you’ve already chafed.

Just apply it to the chafed area before your shower. You won’t need to experience the brutal pain of the shower water hitting that freshly chafed skin.

While Squirrel’s Nut Butter is suitable for men, it’s really good for anyone.

Running Shorts

Runners can always use great running gear. Shorts included!

These adidas Adizero 3″ Split Shorts have a five-star rating and are very lightweight. This makes them perfect for running in the warm summer weather.

This pair of adidas running shorts come with built-in briefs to give you the best range of motion while in action. Runners love the shorter length of these shorts.

Gifts for Runners – Women

Sports Bra

ON Performance Bra

As a woman, I know the expense that a running sports bra can bring. So to get one as a gift would be lovely!

You’ll need to know your runner’s proper size and possibly their favorite brand.

While I enjoyed wearing a Brooks bra for years, my favorite recently became the ON Performance bra. I loved it so much that I bought a second one (in a different color) a few months after purchasing my first.

One day I ran, got home, and realized the shoulder strap had been twisted the whole time. This bra is so comfortable that I hadn’t noticed a twisted strap! This bra gets five stars in my book.

Safety Devices

This is one of those things I am placing under great gifts for women, but honestly, all runners should have these safety devices.

While we mostly hear the stories of women attacked while running, it can and does happen to men too. I’m an advocate for keeping all runners safe. These gifts can help us improve that ability.

Go Guarded Ring

Go Guarded Ring in pink and black.

This heavy-duty plastic serrated-edge ring is comfortably worn on one finger while running.

The Go Guarded Ring gives you some peace of mind on the run. This ring provides you with additional self-defense that could save your life.

She’s Birdie

The She’s Birdie siren alarm can help alert those around you that you may be in trouble.

Whether you run into a shady person or get hurt and need help, She’s Birdie is loud and will draw attention to you. I have mine on hand even when just walking down the street when I’m alone.

Hair Ties

For long-haired runners like myself, hair ties are essential.

A few years ago, my sister gifted me Teleties, which have remained my favorite hair tie for running. The coil design holds my hair in place and doesn’t rip my hair out as elastics do.

I have extremely fine hair, so finding something that doesn’t slide out can be challenging. Teleties saved the day for me!

Running Shorts

Once again, running shorts are a must-have for runners in warm climates. That makes them a great gift.

Patagonia makes fabulous quality shorts for women runners. Runners revere these Patagonia Trailfarer Shorts for being lightweight and comfortable.

They also feature a high-rise fit and a 4.5-inch inseam. This makes them sit on the hips in a comfortable spot while still covering the inner thighs.

Gifts for Marathon Runners

While marathon runners and short-distance runners would appreciate many of the same gifts, there are some things that marathon runners will appreciate more.

Energy Gels

Energy gels are helpful when you’re racking up the miles in training and on race day.

There are many brands of running energy gels. My personal favorite is the Honey Stinger Gold Energy Gels. Made with honey, electrolytes, and B vitamins, the flavor and texture of honey makes this a clear winner to me.

Other popular brands include Huma and GU.

GU was the first energy gel I ever had (while running my first half marathon – bad time to try something new). I hated the texture and felt like I had toothpaste in my mouth. However, other runners love them, so your runner may enjoy them too.

Fitness Tracker

Again, any distance runner will likely enjoy a fitness tracker. But I feel they’re mandatory for marathoners and beyond.

Sure, I know many marathoners and even ultra-marathoners who aren’t into having a GPS watch on their wrist while running. But I think that as fitness watches improve at providing data like heart rate and extra safety, more runners are interested in them.

Garmin Forerunner

The Garmin Forerunner 265S has one of the highest ratings among the Garmin Forerunners.

With its sleek AMOLED touchscreen that’s bright for those sunny day runs, this is the perfect runner companion. Runners also love the battery life, which allows them to wear the watch all day and track their sleep without draining the battery.

Each morning your runner will get their morning report. This will tell them how they slept, their recovery, and their training outlook. It also provides their heart rate variability, training readiness, and the weather forecast to get them out the door at the best time.

This watch is essentially a mini running coach on their wrist. This is the gift to get if you want to splurge on a high-quality item for your runner.

Apple Watch

The Apple Watch is my preferred running watch.

Most runners don’t love the Apple Watch because it has fewer features than watches like Garmin. I like that it’s integrated with the rest of my daily life.

I don’t currently need all the nitty gritty details the Garmins provide. But this is certainly something to consider before purchasing an Apple Watch for your runner.

Running Shoes

Runners, especially long-distance runners, go through shoes in just a few months. When a quality pair of running shoes cost over $150, it’s the ideal running gift.

You’ll need to know your runner’s preferred running shoes. Mine is the Altra Torin. I’ve owned over eight models of running shoes from Altra, and while some have been great, the Torins are my top pick.

Race Entry

If you weren’t aware, runners pay a lot of money to run races. This element of running often makes for funny spectator race signs!

If you want to speak the love language of a runner, a great gift is paying for a race entry. You could choose one of the best marathons to run (like New York City) or opt for something local to you.

Medal Display

A medal display is a perfect gift if your runner is a repeat marathoner. This will hold their medals and show them off in an aesthetic way.

My sister gifted me this medal display years ago, and it’s one of my all-time favorite running gifts I’ve received. It also holds running bibs, so I hold on to the important ones.

Cross-Training Gear

Running is generally not a standalone activity. It’s best if runners are also cross-training to strengthen muscles that are used less frequently while running.

My favorite type of cross-training is yoga, but many runners enjoy cycling.

Yoga Mat

The Yoloha yoga brand is fantastic. As a runner who didn’t know much about yoga, I dove in and purchased a mat from Yoloha in 2020, and I love it.

I now own three different mats for different yoga practices. I’ve also been really happy with their blocks, wheel, and yoga mat bag.

Yoloha is also a small business based in Charleston, South Caroline. For that, I’m super happy to have found and supported them.

Stationary Bike

Because many runners like cycling as their cross-training, a stationary bike can be the ideal running gift.

If an entire stationary bike is beyond your budget and your runner already has a bike, a great option is a stationary bike stand. This can transform their road or mountain bike into a stationary bike they can ride indoors.

Massage

When I was running three marathons in three months back in 2015, I promised to get a massage when I was done. It was the best experience ever.

A massage is an excellent gift for a runner, whether in training or about to run a big race. Gifting a gift card for a massage is the perfect way to tell your runner that you love them!

Hatch Restore Sunrise Alarm Clock

This gift can be for anyone who must wake up early before the sun is up. Oftentimes, that’s the case for runners.

I love my Hatch Restore alarm clock. Waking up to the alarm clock emulating a sunrise has been a game-changer for me. You can choose the color of the sunrise and pair it with a wake-up sound.

I’ve used my Hatch Restore for nearly three years, and it’s made waking up early much easier.

Gifts for Trail Runners

Trail Running Shoes

Trail runners have special shoes. These shoes will help them to grip the trail and keep their feet as dry as possible.

I have a pair of Altra Timp trail running shoes. While I’m not a trail runner, I love using them for hiking. They’re spacious in the toebox, great for keeping traction to the trail, and have kept my feet dry even on a wet trail.

Gaiters

Gaiters are essential for keeping things out of your shoes. This is an issue I’ve had even with road running.

You might blister or bruise if something like a small rock gets into your shoe while running. Gaiters are perfect for preventing this, especially on trails where debris is plentiful.

Some trail running shoes, like the Altras, even come equipped with a gaiter attachment.

Running Compression Socks

Road runners wear compression socks, too, but for trail runners, they’re essential.

Compression socks are great for the compressive benefits they offer. However, they offer trail runners leg protection on trails where there may be brush that can cut the legs.

Hydration Vest

Spending time running in the wilderness means carrying your hydration.

Trail runners also tend to run far distances, so they must carry a lot of water. A hydration vest is a trail runner’s best friend.

Pair a hydration vest with a sports hydration drink to make a great gift basket. My favorite running drink is Nuun. This is an ideal gift for any trail runner.

Small Gifts for Runners

These are great gifts if you’re doing a White Elephant/Yankee Swap for runners where you need a small gift.

Running Journal

Running journals are great for runners who are looking to improve their abilities.

A running journal helps them write down everything they need to track: running distance, pace, how they felt, what they ate before, how they felt after, and so on. This tool can seriously improve their running by showing them what has historically worked well for them.

Coffee Cup

A coffee cup that yells, “I’m a runner!” is always a solid option. As the running joke goes, “How do you know if someone is a marathon runner? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you.”

There are so many fantastic options. From adorable to hilarious, there’s a running coffee mug for every runner.

Wine Tumbler

If your runner is more into wine than coffee, you can’t go wrong with a wine tumbler specific to the sport of running.

Your running buddy will love having a reason to talk about running on wine nights.

Running Fuel

Runners can go through a lot of fuel. This means that the cost can add up rapidly.

Gifting your runner an assortment of running fuel says you care about their hobby.

My number one option has always been Honey Stinger. Whether you want a gel-based running fuel or something more solid like the Honey Stinger Waffles or the Nut + Seed bars, there’s a fuel for every runner.

Running Hydration

Staying hydrated while running is so important. But it’s also essential to stay hydrated when not running.

Gifting your runner hydration will help them stay safe and healthy all the time. If you’re looking for a gift to give during the hot summer months, I recommend pairing some Nuun Hydration with a handheld water bottle. It’s a match made in running gift heaven!

Funny Gifts for Runners

The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run Long Distances Book

A friend of mine gifted me this book years ago; it was the perfect gift.

This book is a collection of comics surrounding the sport of running.

It’ll make your runner laugh and question why they put themselves through the torture of running. And it’ll remind them why they do exactly that.

Bumper Sticker

There are an array of bumper stickers and magnets to gift a runner.

If your runner will be running their first marathon, a 26.2 magnet is an ideal gift.

But great bumper sticker options exist if you want to make your runner laugh. My favorites include the “0.0 (I don’t run)” and “26.7 (I got lost)” magnets.
