Is Running in Place Effective? 10 of the Best Benefits
As someone passionate about fitness and making it a part of my everyday life, I’ve often asked myself this question – is running in place an effective way to work out?
After taking a weekly high-intensity interval training (HIIT) class where we spend some time running in place, I can answer the question from personal experience with a resounding “YES!“
Even as a 12-time marathon runner, I see the significant benefits running in place can bring. So let’s dive into this topic, and maybe you’ll start your journey toward an active lifestyle today with this workout!
Is Running in Place as Effective as Running Outside?
Studies have shown that running in place is an effective form of cardio exercise.
One of the most remarkable studies suggests that running in place can help improve posture!
Running in place is nearly as efficient and beneficial for increasing aerobic capacity as running outside. Although the action is not identical, the body responds to it in a very similar manner.
The main difference is the effort needed to move forward when running outside. Outdoor running requires additional energy because you must pull your body with each step.
This is the difference between running outdoors and on the treadmill, but hardly anyone questions whether treadmill running is effective.
The key is to challenge yourself while running in place. Variations like high knees, jumping jacks, and squat jumps will keep your heart rate up and provide an effective workout.
Running in place is an excellent starting place if you’re looking for a way to get your heart rate up to improve your cardiovascular health and physical fitness.

10 Benefits of Running in Place
Running in place offers several benefits, including:
1. It can be done anywhere
You don’t need a gym, running track, or treadmill to run in place.
Starting right now from the comfort of your home is entirely possible. Take it outside on a nice day to enjoy the weather!
2. You can tailor it to your needs
The intensity and duration can be altered to match your fitness level.
Kick it up a notch by including high knees, quick feet sprints, or even jumping jacks. Use music to motivate you to keep going.
3. The elements are controlled
You don’t have to worry about traffic or outdoor elements like rain or heat.
Rather than leaving the house or heading outside to run, you can work with what you’ve got at home as long as you have an area free from obstacles.
As someone who despises hot weather running, running in place is a great alternative that can be done from the comfort of an air-conditioned home.
4. Improved coordination
Running in place improves coordination, similarly to running outdoors, because of its intense nature.
When running in place, you constantly shift your body weight from one foot to the other. This requires you to maintain balance while also helping you to build strength. If and when you decide to run outdoors, your coordination will be at an advanced level.
5. Increased strength and muscle endurance
If the two choices you are presented with are not exercising or running in place, you can bet that running in place is the option to increase your strength and endurance.
This is a great stepping stone for those trying to go from couch to 5k or even farther. Getting started can be the hardest part. Running in place makes it easier to obtain that baseline endurance.
6. Reduced risk of injury
Due to the low-impact nature of running in place, you’re less likely to wind up injured than running outdoors.
Running outdoors can strain the body significantly, especially with elements like elevation and uneven ground.
While you don’t necessarily need to wear shoes for running in place, they can help provide some extra shock absorption. They may work best for you and your body and make you feel more comfortable.
7. More energy and a better mood
Moving the body however you can is the best way to enhance your mood.
Although you may not feel the burst of energy the first few times you run in place, you’ll soon find you’re energized throughout the day when you stick to a schedule. Consider making running in place a part of your morning routine to see the benefits of consistency.
8. Easy to learn
There are no fancy rules to learn about running in place.
If you haven’t run in years, have no fear. Learning to run in place should take only a little time. And even if it takes you more time, you’re in the comfort of your home, where you can learn without concern for others watching you.
Getting a quality mat, workout clothing, and running shoes can undoubtedly enhance your experience, but these items are optional for most.
9. Adapted to any fitness level or age group
Whether you’re young or old, you can adjust running in place to suit your physical fitness needs.
If you feel running in place is too fast, opt for simple step touches. This is done by stepping down with one foot and bringing the other foot to hover beside it before returning it to under the hip, placing it down, and picking up the other foot to meet it.
10. Full-body workout that’s convenient and fun
Shoot your arms into the air or use hand weights to add to the benefits of muscle-building. Run in place while throwing in some dance moves to your favorite song.
Make this your favorite activity, and you’ll stick to it.
Overall, running in place is an accessible form of exercise that can help you meet aerobic fitness goals and build endurance. If you’re looking for an easy-to-learn workout with minimal equipment requirements, why not give running in place a go?

What You Need to Run in Place
In theory, you may not need anything. You may be ready to start if you feel comfortable in your everyday clothes and don’t feel the need for running shoes.
However, some items you may find helpful include:
👉🏼 Running shoes
These can help decrease the already low impact of running in place. Consider a quality pair of running shoes that can help you transition to running outdoors when you feel ready.
👉🏼 Running socks
High-quality running socks may feel unnecessary, but they help your feet stay dry and comfortable.
👉🏼 Moisture-wicking clothes
Moisture-wicking fabric is critical when you start to sweat. This will help pull the sweat away from your skin so you can stay comfortable and focus on your workout.
👉🏼 A water bottle
Opt for a bottle that’s easy to take sips from while in motion. This will be useful when you need a quick drink but don’t want to stop your workout.
👉🏼 A workout/yoga mat
A mat can aid in creating a softer landing. This reduces any impact on your joints and will make it easier to run in place longer.
👉🏼 A hand towel
When you’re running like a champion, this small towel will allow you to wipe sweat from your forehead, neck, arms, etc.
👉🏼 A Bluetooth speaker to pump up the jams
Keep yourself motivated with a fire playlist.
✅ I recommend the Noxgear 39g Bluetooth speaker.
Wear it on your shirt, stick it on something magnetic in the room, or place it on a table beside you while you run in place.
While most, if not all, of these things are optional, they could make running in place more manageable and more enjoyable for you.
My Running in Place Experience
Let’s dive deeper into my experience with my weekly HIIT class.
It’s considered a sculpt class at my local yoga studio, and my instructor is fierce. She’s made an awesome 60-minute circuit that leaves me feeling both reinvigorated and absolutely exhausted each Monday.
While we spend a lot of time with weights and about a minute doing burpees (learning to love them while absolutely hating them), I see the incredible effects when we do a circuit of running in place.
During this circuit, my heart rate gets to the highest point it ever is during the class. This is how I have experienced the incredible benefits of running in place.
Running in Place Workout
My gift to you! This is the workout that we do with running in place at my HIIT class. This is for those who want something more interesting than simply running.
✔️ Start by running in place at a relatively slow pace. Move around until you feel nice and warm.
✔️ Next, run as fast as possible while remaining in place for 20-30 seconds. Quick feet here!
✔️ Return to that slow running-in-place pace for a minute.
✔️ For the next 20-30 seconds, jumping jacks. Keep at a steady pace.
✔️ The next 20-30 seconds, butt kickers, drive your heels as close to your butt as possible while maintaining a decent pace.
✔️ Next up, squat jumps. Squat down and aim to get your thighs parallel to the ground. Jump up and reach for the sky; repeat this action for 20-30 seconds.
✔️ Back to the easy-paced running in place.
You can repeat this specific circuit for as long as you need.
My advice? Make a great playlist of high-energy songs that make you pumped and carry on your workout like the awesome person you are.
